Weekly Reflection - April 22-28

April 29, 2018

Resist the “it’s almost the end of the school year” mental checkout.

At this time of year, it is always difficult to stay motivated at work. Everyone, teachers and students alike, are just tired! We are bombarded by testing, interrupted schedules, and the tediousness of the year end wrap up. It’s easy to mentally check out and to get bogged down with the feeling of not wanting to do anything. Admittedly, some of my coworkers are there, and it drains the energy.

Teaching is how I spend the majority of my days. It lights me up and inspires me to work hard. I wanted to work this week, and plan to try until the end of the year, to give the same effort and energy to my work as in the beginning and middle of the year. I can’t imagine spending 8 hours a day just trudging through my job. That would drain me faster than the work itself. It’s important to me to be a positive light in my students’ and coworkers’ lives. I can’t let myself check out for them, and for me.

So how do I do that? I know that I am the best version of me when I am balanced and fulfilled in the different parts of my life. I do that by prioritizing both my physical and mental health; eating nourishing food, moving my body, taking time for reflection, and sleeping enough (which for me is a lot!). So, I’ll just keep doing that- grinding through my No Fuss, health focused, days and keeping my own wellness as one of my top priorities. That’s how I am my best- for myself, my loved ones, my students, and my coworkers.

Eat for nourishment:

Some favorites of my meals this week. I always try to eat as many whole plant foods as possible.

Move to feel good:

I’m really happy with my workouts this week. I am so excited for better weather to be able to get out to the trails more in coming weeks.

Sunday: rest

Monday: walk with the dog, shoulders/chest/triceps, taught core class

Tuesday: 15 min of treadmill intervals, taught 2 fit classes

Wednesday: walk with the dog, back/biceps/taught core class

Thursday: HIIT circuit workout

Friday: ran a 5k on the trails

Saturday: taught core class, HEAVY legs

This week I had a run-in with seasonal allergies for maybe the first time in my life. Ugh it’s awful. I feel fine but I am so congested and my voice is hoarse (although I kind of like the raspy, sexy voice thing ala Phoebe singing Smelly Cat). I turned to some soothing essential oils to help me get that under wraps. I used Raven, which is blend that supports the respiratory system. I diffused it with lavender at night which made for a really restful night’s sleep. I also rubbed it into my chest and throat with some coconut oil and it reminded me of Vick’s rub. It was really cooling and soothing to help me sleep.

This week was an upswing over all. The changing weather has really helped my mood to improve, and I have a clear vision of the end of the school year. There is nothing more motivating to a teacher than the impending summer break! As I said earlier, it’s really important to me that I don’t become complacent over these last several weeks, and I will continue my health and wellness focused days to keep me going.
