Transitioning to Toxic-Free

April 19, 2018

As a philosophy, I try to live my life with a focus on whole, natural, wellness. I eat whole natural foods, I move my body to help keep it strong, I drink lots of water, and I sleep lots of hours. As a result, I stay healthy and vibrant.

When I learned about the toxicity of so many products that we have in our homes, my good vibes, natural living philosophy got thrown for a loop! I am so conscious of how I treat my body and what I put in it, but had never really thought about what I expose it to on a daily basis.

It turns out that nearly all of the cleaning product that we use in our homes contain synthetic, toxic chemicals that have no business being in our system. When we are exposed to them regularly, through inhalation in the air or topically absorbed through our skin, these chemicals swim around through all of our bodily systems and wreak all kinds of havoc. It turns out that exposure to these toxins over decades can be carcinogenic- promote the growth of cancerous cells. Like, WHAAAT? Read all about it at www.ewg.org

For real, I was completely shaken to start learning about the toxic chemicals in our environments. At my first Young Living class, the wonderful host mentioned how she uses essential oils to create her own DIY cleaning and cosmetic products. I was mesmerized, and my brain was spinning, creating a list of products I wanted to replace in my little apartment.

Unfortunately, my budget doesn’t allow for a total overhaul. So, I planned to transition slowly, swapping out a few toxic products at a time. Eventually, I would like to make most of my own household products. To get me started, I bought the Thieves Starter Kit, and phew was it worth it!

The kit comes with

  • Thieves Essential Oil Blend (15ml)

  • AromaBright Toothpaste

  • Household Cleaner (2, 14.4oz bottles)

  • Mouthwash

  • Foaming Handsoap (2 bottles)

  • Waterless Hand Purifier (2 bottles)

  • Thieves Spray (2, 1oz bottles)

Here’s what I’ve been using the past month and what I think:

Thieves All Purpose Cleaner

Replaces- Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner,Wet Swiffer Pads

Thoughts- I LOVE this stuff! The kit came with 2 bottles and it goes such a long way. I use 2 capfuls in the spray bottle and fill the rest with water. That is kind of guessing on the dilution ratios that are on the back of the bottle, mostly out of laziness. It smells so nice, and I have really come to associate the smell of the Thieves Oil Blend with cleanliness. I also really like lemon for cleaning products, so I imagine I could add a drop of 2 of lemon oil and get that same effect. It’s really effective on the counters, floors, bathtub, everything! I also feel like I waste a lot less not using the Lysol wipes for everything. I use a dish towel and then just throw it in the washer. I also, weirdly, find the glass squeeze bottle super fun to use.

Foaming Hand Soap

Replaces- other hand soap, I usually buy whatever is cheapest (aka most toxic) at theGrocery

Thoughts- I mean, it’s hand soap. I do really like the Thieves sent. I also decided to dilute it to make it last a little longer. I split the original bottle between two glass pump bottles I bought off of Amazon. Works like a charm.

AromaBright Toothpaste

Replaces- other toothpast, I always buy Crest Whitening

Thoughts- I’m split on whether I like this stuff. I like that it's nontoxic. The flavor took some getting used to because it is Thieves and not mint, but I don’t hate that. What I really don’t love is that it doesn’t foam up like I am used to. The foaming agent in regular toothpaste definitely isn’t a natural aspect, but I kind of miss it. I wonder if my teeth are really getting clean without the foam getting into all the nooks and crannies? I use an electric toothbrush, so that helps as well. Not sure if I will repurchase this one. I did get some orange oil to add to it in my most recent order. Supposedly, this will help whiten my teeth. Definitely going to give that a shot. I will report back with results.

Thieves Mouthwash

Replaces- Listerine mouthwash

Thoughts- I really really like this mouthwash. It makes my mouth feel really clean but without that alcohol taste and burn of other types of mouthwash. I diluted this also because I found the first try really strong. Have been doing about ⅓ of the original bottle plus water to fill up this glass milk bottle I have. It lasts a long time in there and is the right level of strength.

Overall, I am really liking the Thieves cleaning products. I think it was a good buy for me to help ease in to nontoxic cleaning. I will definitely continue using these products, and get all I can out of them. I hope eventually to make my own products DIY style, but I wasn’t ready to go there yet. This was a good place to start. Another baby step toward creating habits that lead to long term health and wellness. It all adds up in the end to creating the vibrant and healthy life that I want.
